The United States military has introduced a new strategic framework within its Manufacturing Technology Program to address long-standing challenges in scaling defense innovations. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between laboratory demonstrations and full-scale commercial production, a process often hindered by the difficulties of scaling emerging technologies.
In a shift of terminology, the Department of Defense is now referring to this process as the “transition corridor.” This replaces the common industry descriptor, the “valley of death,” which historically characterized the point where promising new technologies frequently fail before reaching the production floor.
By focusing on the “transition corridor,” the updated strategy emphasizes the importance of prioritizing factory floor readiness alongside early-stage research. The strategy serves as a formal acknowledgment of the systemic difficulties in transitioning technology from development environments to practical, operational manufacturing settings.
