Researchers disable remote code execution flaw in abandoned Popcorn Time app

Security researchers have taken action to neutralize a significant vulnerability within the Time4Popcorn application, a fork of the well-known Popcorn Time BitTorrent client. The initiative involved remotely disabling a vulnerable updater component that had been left exposed in the abandoned software.

Before this intervention, the flaw posed a substantial security risk to the application’s user base, which is estimated to reach into the millions. Had the vulnerability been exploited by malicious actors, it could have enabled them to execute unauthorized code on affected computer systems with elevated privileges. By disabling the compromised update mechanism, researchers have effectively mitigated the threat of remote code execution (RCE) attacks stemming from this specific vector.
