Amazon has announced a significant update to its Amazon Polly Generative engine, designed to provide more expressive, natural, and accurate speech output for developers and enterprises. The upgrade, which is now generally available in production, introduces 14 new voices across nine locales, most notably adding Hindi and Finnish language support for the first time.
Enhanced Voice Capabilities
The updated engine aims to better reflect emotional nuance and prosody based on input text without requiring manual configuration. According to the company, the engine provides improved performance in handling complex entities such as currency, dates, addresses, and tracking numbers. This increased accuracy is intended to support high-stakes use cases like automated customer service contact centers and interactive voice response (IVR) systems.
Compatibility and Integration
For existing users of Amazon Polly, the update functions as a drop-in replacement. No code modifications are required; the system continues to use the same API calls, and voice names remain unchanged. The upgrade applies to the existing generative voice catalog, allowing developers to benefit from higher quality output within their current application architectures. The service continues to support Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) for fine-grained control over audio synthesis.
Use Cases and Scalability
Amazon Polly remains a fully managed service designed for scalable deployment. Common applications include creating lifelike voices for large language model (LLM) agentic workflows, localizing content for global media markets, narrating e-learning materials, and providing accessibility features. With the inclusion of Hindi and Finnish, organizations can now localize content into a broader array of global markets using a single pipeline. The service is available across 11 AWS Regions, including AWS GovCloud (US-West).
Despite the functional improvements, the company confirmed that pricing for the service remains unchanged, maintaining its pay-as-you-go model. Developers can access the new voices through the AWS Management Console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), or the standard AWS SDKs.
