Amazon updates SageMaker Studio onboarding to streamline developer access

Amazon has launched an updated sign-up experience for new Amazon SageMaker AI customers, designed to reduce the friction previously associated with creating an AWS account. The update allows users to access a fully configured SageMaker Studio environment shortly after signing up, using existing credentials from platforms including Google, GitHub, Apple, and Amazon, or via email.

This shift addresses a prior barrier to entry for individual developers and small teams, who previously needed to complete a multi-step verification process—including entering contact information and credit card details—before they could begin working. Under the new flow, most new customers are not required to provide payment details. Additionally, the environment provisioning time for SageMaker Studio is now approximately 20 seconds.

To support new users, Amazon is providing up to $200 in AWS Free Tier credits. The initial $100 is automatically applied, with the opportunity to earn an additional $100. These credits are applicable to various tasks within SageMaker AI, such as model training, customization, notebook operations, and endpoint deployment. The Free Tier period lasts for six months or until the credits are exhausted, at which point resource usage is automatically halted to prevent unexpected charges.

Technically, these new environments come pre-configured, removing the need for users to manually manage AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) roles for tasks like deployment and training. Furthermore, eligible accounts receive default access to specific GPU instance types, including G5, G6, and G4dn, with the Studio interface providing visibility into instance quota availability.

These changes build upon earlier improvements to the developer experience, such as the introduction of deep links that allow for a transition from Hugging Face model pages directly into SageMaker Studio workflows. While this updated sign-up process is tailored for new AWS accounts, existing account holders will see no changes to their current sign-in methods. Users can initiate the process by visiting the Amazon SageMaker Studio page or by selecting 'Deploy on SageMaker AI' from supported models on Hugging Face.

  • Amazon Bedrock adds structured output support for Anthropic Claude models

Amazon Bedrock adds structured output support for Anthropic Claude models

Amazon Bedrock has launched native support for structured outputs for all Anthropic Claude models, enabling developers to receive schema-compliant JSON responses directly from the service. This update, available across both the bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle endpoints, aims to eliminate the need for custom parsing, manual retry logic, and post-processing steps when integrating AI outputs into business applications.

By utilizing constrained decoding during token generation, Amazon Bedrock ensures that model responses conform to a specific JSON schema defined by the user. The platform validates these schemas against a subset of JSON Schema Draft 2020-12 and uses a caching mechanism to maintain performance, storing compiled grammars for 24 hours to accelerate subsequent requests. Because the model is constrained to generate only valid JSON, developers can expect type-safe, predictable outputs that match their existing application data models.

This functionality serves several high-volume, automated use cases, such as extracting fields from complex financial documents or compliance reports, parsing clinical notes into electronic health records, and automating support ticket routing based on sentiment and intent classification.

In addition to standard JSON schema support, the company introduced "strict tool use" on the bedrock-mantle endpoint. This feature allows for the enforcement of specific tool parameters, ensuring that arguments generated by the model for agentic workflows precisely match defined requirements. This is particularly relevant for multi-step AI agents that rely on server-side tools like code interpreters or web search functions.

For production-scale operations, the structured output feature supports batch inference for asynchronous processing and cross-region inference on the bedrock-runtime endpoint. It also allows for real-time streaming of structured responses as typed events. To ensure reliability, AWS advises developers to require the 'additionalProperties: false' parameter in their schemas and to implement logic that handles potential response truncations or safety-related refusals. By standardizing the format of AI responses at the generation level, organizations can reduce error-handling complexity and integrate large language models into mission-critical data pipelines with greater consistency.
