Dongfang Electric to develop in-situ 3D printing for Three Gorges Dam turbine repairs

China Yangtze Power has awarded a contract to Dongfang Electric Machinery to develop and test in-situ additive manufacturing (AM) technology specifically designed for the maintenance of turbine runner seal rings. The project, valued at approximately 15.8 million yuan (around $2.36 million), focuses on enhancing repair capabilities at the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower station.

The 29-month development initiative addresses the maintenance needs of seal rings across eight different generator types installed at the facility. These components vary in size, with diameters ranging from 8.4 to 10.9 meters. By implementing in-situ AM techniques, the project aims to facilitate the repair of these large-scale components directly within the turbine housing, potentially reducing the logistical complexities and downtime associated with traditional removal and refurbishment processes.

The project represents a targeted application of 3D printing technology within the renewable energy sector, focusing on extending the operational lifespan of critical hydropower infrastructure through advanced on-site maintenance solutions.
