Japan’s GMO Group urges customers to shut down PCs following ransomware threat

The GMO Group, a prominent Japanese internet service provider, has issued an urgent advisory to its customer base, instructing them to disconnect their systems from the internet and shut down their computers. This precautionary measure follows a security breach involving the company’s Onamae Desktop Cloud platform.

According to the company, a threat actor successfully compromised the service and subsequently issued a threat to launch a ransomware attack. In response to the potential risk of data encryption and system compromise, GMO Group management initiated this protocol to safeguard customer equipment and data.

The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with cloud-hosted virtual desktop infrastructure and the rapid mitigation steps required when service providers detect unauthorized access. At this time, customers are urged to follow the company’s instructions regarding their desktop hardware to minimize exposure to the threatened ransomware activity.
