Hugging Face policy lead cautions against relying on embedded AI evaluators

AI research organizations currently rely heavily on model benchmarking to assess and compare AI products. These evaluators are intended to serve as neutral, precise tools for determining how different models perform relative to one another.

However, these assessment systems are not yet a simple solution for measuring AI quality. According to Irene Solaiman, chief policy officer at Hugging Face, the methodologies supporting these evaluations are intricate and remain in a state of development. Speaking at a recent event, Solaiman emphasized that while benchmarks are central to how laboratories establish their reputations, the current state of these systems involves significant complexity that continues to mature.
