Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have announced the public release of OpenCAL, a build-it-yourself volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) printer. The system is designed to allow users to assemble their own high-speed 3D printing hardware at a cost of approximately $1,600.
Volumetric additive manufacturing differs from traditional layer-based 3D printing techniques. OpenCAL functions by solidifying an entire part simultaneously inside a rotating vial of resin. According to the research team, this process allows for the production of a complete object in about 90 seconds.
By releasing the design for OpenCAL, the researchers aim to provide broader access to volumetric 3D printing technology, which is noted for its rapid production speeds compared to conventional additive manufacturing methods. The project highlights ongoing developments in making advanced manufacturing tools more accessible to the wider research and maker communities.
