A project led by the University of Nottingham is set to introduce 3D design and printing technology into hospital schools across England. The three-year initiative aims to provide young patients with technical design skills and will concurrently study whether these activities can positively influence the recovery process of children and young people receiving hospital-based education.
The program is supported by financial backing from the Royal Society Science Community Grant and the Julia Rausing Trust. Plans for the project involve an rollout across 25 schools, offering students access to additive manufacturing tools and design curricula tailored to the hospital environment.
By integrating advanced manufacturing technology into the hospital setting, the initiative seeks to foster digital literacy and creative engagement among students whose education is interrupted by health challenges. Researchers involved in the project will monitor the impact of these educational activities as part of the broader study on pediatric patient experience.
