The US Department of Commerce has announced a commitment of up to $389 million in research and development funding dedicated to the advancement of semiconductor technology. The initiative specifically aims to support hardware innovations required for fusion energy projects and advanced computing systems.
The funding will support research led by industry players including Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), which is backed by Google, and Helion Energy, which is backed by Microsoft. These companies are working to address the specialized semiconductor requirements necessary for the complex demands of fusion and large-scale computational infrastructure.
This investment reflects a strategic push to align critical semiconductor development with high-priority technological sectors, such as clean energy production and next-generation computing capabilities.
