Stop-motion studio LAIKA has reached an agreement with Prague-based software developer Additive Appearance to integrate the PrismSlicer renderer into the studio’s 3D printing toolkit. The partnership aims to provide LAIKA’s artists with advanced visualization capabilities during the production of stop-motion character components.
The PrismSlicer software functions by estimating how color and translucency will appear in a final PolyJet 3D printed object before the physical printing process begins. By previewing these material characteristics in a digital environment, the studio can improve its design and quality control workflows. This technology assists artists in predicting the visual outcome of printed character faces, a critical element in the studio’s intricate animation production process.
The collaboration highlights the increasing use of specialized rendering and simulation software within advanced manufacturing to bridge the gap between digital design and final physical output. As LAIKA continues to utilize 3D printing for character development, tools like PrismSlicer serve to streamline the iterative stages of design, allowing for more precise control over the aesthetic properties of printed elements.
