Microsoft sets February 2027 deadline for retiring SMS and voice authentication in Entra ID

Microsoft has renewed its call for Entra ID administrators to accelerate the migration of users toward phishing-resistant authentication methods. This push is part of a planned transition to modernize security protocols, with the company confirming that support for SMS and voice-based authentication will be retired in February 2027.

The move aims to reduce reliance on legacy authentication mechanisms that are often more susceptible to interception or phishing attacks. By encouraging the adoption of passkeys—which leverage cryptographic keys rather than shared secrets—Microsoft intends to bolster security for organizations managing identities through its Entra ID platform.

Administrators are being urged to initiate this migration well in advance of the 2027 deadline to prevent potential sign-in disruptions for end users. The shift reflects a broader industry trend toward passwordless and phishing-resistant authentication frameworks to better defend against evolving credential-based threats.
